Fever
FRAXEL is really a short term for fractionated laser. Think of your skin as a digital photo that is delicately retouched one spot, or pixel, at a time. This is what FRAXEL does. It affects a fraction of tissue at a time with tiny, microscopic laser columns that enter into your skin, stimulating a natural healing process that works from the inside out.
Basically, your own body replaces the damaged microscopic columns with younger, smoother, healthier skin. The minute injuries caused by the FRAXEL laser stimulates your body to heal itself by increasing the production of collagen and elastin, those key ingredients that keep our skins supple, taut and youthful!
The FRAXEL laser only targets a fraction of your skin, leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This “fractional treatment” is what makes FRAXEL so unique…. giving superior results with minimal downtime – this is why FRAXEL laser has become one of the most popular skin treatments in the modern world.
Depending on the level of skin damage you have, or if you just want prevention and maintenance, there is a FRAXEL treatment tailor made for you. FRAXEL has FDA clearance for the following:
REPAIR:
- Wrinkles
- Fine lines
- Furrows
- Skin texture
- Pigmented lesions (sun or age spots)
- Sun-induced redness
RESTORE AND REFINE:
- Skin resurfacing
- Fine lines around eyes
- Discolouration and uneven pigmentation
- Melasma (mask of pregnancy)
- Acne scars
- Surgical scars
- Actinic keratosis (scaly, sun spots)
In short, a FRAXEL laser treatment creates smoother, fresher, healthier, younger-looking skin with improved tone, texture, and pore size….and the softening of wrinkles and lines….This is why everyone is talking about FRAXEL!
Treatment costs vary according to area being treated, but typically cost about R5000 for a full face. Your doctor or aesthetic laser specialist will be able to advise you on exactly what is needed and what the estimated costs will be.
FAQ:
Who is a good candidate for FRAXEL?
If your skin has signs of environmental damage, such as sun spots, actinic keratoses, and fine lines and wrinkles, you will benefit from a FRAXEL laser treatment. Pigmentation changes such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and hormonal pigmentation such as melasma (mask of pregnancy) also respond well to FRAXEL and you will see a big improvement if you have poor skin texture, enlarged pores, and acne scarring.
How is a FRAXEL procedure performed?
An anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to be treated and left on for 30-60 minutes to numb the area. It is then cleaned off and the area is cooled with cold air. The FRAXEL laser is then passed over the treatment area 3 times (for the ‘Fraxel Facial’) or 8 times (for the normal Fraxel treatment). It will feel like tiny prickles on your skin and will be mildly uncomfortable. Depending on the size of the area being treated, the FRAXEL laser treatment should take approx 20-30 minutes. After the treatment, a mild, soothing moisturiser will be applied as well as a sun block.
What can I expect immediately after a FRAXEL treatment and over the next few days?
Your skin will be red in colour with mild swelling and will feel like it has been sunburned. This heat usually settles within a few hours. The redness and swelling settles within a few days. Every patient is different – some have very little visible evidence of a FRAXEL laser treatment, others are very red for a few days. Once the redness has settled, you will feel tiny bumps of dry skin on your face, a bit like sandpaper. These are areas of dead cells which will gradually come-away from the skin as a fine ‘dust’. This represents the microscopic columns where the laser has penetrated the skin.
